SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN SANA'A
Streets in most cities and towns of Yemen have experienced mounting solid waste as the garbage collection system slowed down due to insecurity, lack of fuel to operate solid waste management trucks and machines, and arrears in municipal employee salary payments. This situation has created unhygienic living conditions for the residents and internally displaced persons, increasing health risks with the proliferation of water-borne diseases.
This project will support garbage collection in Azal district of Sana’a to clean the streets and restore a healthy environment. It will focus on (i) establishing garbage collection and sorting points; (ii) provision of garbage bins to the local homes and shops; and (iii) providing transportation (i.e. tricycles and/or trucks) for waste collection and dumping at the waste disposal site. Youth from the area will have the opportunity to turn garbage collection into cash through the delivery of basic social services, maximizing on recycling avenues.
